I’m a physician with a PhD in hygiene and preventive medicine, a master in epidemiology, and a master in nutrition. I have been active on cancer research for about 25 years c/o Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano (INT), with 71 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 4 book contributions. I’m now the Director of the Nutrition Research and Metabolomics Unit of INT.

I have been involved in observational studies and randomized dietary intervention trial for the prevention of cancer and cancer recurrences (specially breast cancer). I had the responsibility of the MeMeMe study, a phase III randomized controlled trial, aimed at testing the effect of treatment with Metformin and Mediterranean diet in the prevention of age-related chronic diseases in people with metabolic syndrome. This trial has recently proved the protective effect of Metformin in the prevention of type-2 diabetes.

At present, I have the responsibility for the creation of a web-based cohort (and intervention) to investigate the role of environmental factors in the occurrence of BRCA-related cancers (e-BRAVE study and ELISAH). I’ m also the PI of a low-inflammatory Mediterranean dietary intervention to reduce markers of inflammation and the number of adenomas in patients with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (AIRC 2024).
